Abstract
This research examines the efficacy of yoga as an intervention to improve focus in linguistically diverse student populations. As the multicultural nature of the modern school environment increases, students’ cognitive functioning can be affected by disparities in language proficiency, cultural adaptation, and stress-related academic and social integration factors. This research examines the influence of systematic practice of yoga on attention and concentration levels, especially for students who are exposed to linguistic diversity.
A quasi-experimental design was applied, with participants distributed based on their native language and randomly assigned to a yoga group and a control group. Pre- and post-intervention measures were administered to assess focus through standardized cognitive tests and self-report questionnaires. Initial results indicate that yoga practices encompassing meditation to physical asanas can improve focus and cognitive flexibility substantially regardless of linguistic background. Additionally, changes in mindfulness and stress management as reported by participants provide a possible explanation for the improved cognitive performance. Implications for the educational setting of this study highlight the value of integrative mind–body practices to improve a more inclusive learning environment that maximizes the full potential of a diverse student population.
